The Evil Tree

Strange things are afoot in the woods around RuneScape. An unusual sapling has been seen sprouting among the trees, and it’s growing at an alarming rate.

Aided by a familiar-looking farmer, you could help encourage this burgeoning seedling - but keep an axe and tinderbox handy because it could become…an evil tree!

For the lumberjacks and fire-starters among you, this distraction and diversion offers a new way of training your Firemaking and Woodcutting skills; and there are other rewards up for grabs, too, including seeds, logs, birds’ nests, and gold.

Like the Shooting Star, evil trees will only stick around for a limited amount of time, so make sure you don’t miss them or you’ll be waiting a while for the next one.

And if you find yourself face to face with an evil tree without your axe, miles from a bank, don’t worry!

The helpful leprechaun has all the tools you’ll need. He might even bolster your rewards with a special ability that will automatically bank any logs you don’t have the space to carry. This perk will last for between five and thirty minutes, depending on your performance.

One of the easiest ways to make money is killing chickens by Varrock or Lumbridge;

1)collect about 500 feathers
2)collect 20 raw chickens
3) bury all your bones

go to port sarim and cook all chicken (raise cooking) eat them or sell them by the wilderness later, now for “the real money”; go to fishing shop and value feathers they stay from 1 gold to 4 gold, when they are 3 or 4 gold sell them 10 at a time with 500 feathers you can: make 15 to 20k, raise a little combat, and the most important… raise cooking level!!!

A New Direction coming From Mark Gerhard

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to introduce myself to you all. My name is Mark Gerhard and I am the new CEO of Jagex, the makers of RuneScape. I have been fortunate enough to have worked at Jagex for some time now and consider us to be first and foremost a games developer. We’re driven by teams that not only care passionately about games but also actively enjoy playing the games we create. We are going to be making a number of improvements to the game, I'm also keen to clear up a few misconceptions about RuneScape at the same time and I also believe there are a few things we have done wrong in the past that I want to apologise for.

To start off with, we want to be more open and listen to our players. Some of you may consider Jagex a secretive and closed-off company which isn't how we want to be perceived moving forward. Unlike most other companies, it just isn't our style to spend our time self marketing or shouting about how great we are, we prefer to just get on with it and make cool games, but that doesn't mean we don't listen to what you have to say.

A good example of this is that a lot of free players told us they found our video adverts before the game annoying to the point it was putting them off playing, so we've scrapped them with immediate effect. We now appreciate that it can be frustrating having to sit through a video advert when you just want to play RuneScape, so we have to put our hands up to admit we made a mistake and say that we're sorry. To be completely candid with you, video adverts generate significantly more revenue than other adverts, but as one of our fundamental philosophies is that having fun is more important to us than making as much money as possible, we have removed video adverts from the game.

We are also planning to change the way we communicate with you. We are going to be bringing back Development Diaries but making them more regular and focused on some of the different projects we're currently working on for you. These will replace Behind the Scenes, which we have found a creative constraint on our developers as the promised content has to come out as communicated in order to avoid disappointment and prevented us from surprising you with better or different content. It has also led to compromises in quality that we've not been happy with and, most importantly, pieces of content being released which you, our players, have not enjoyed as much as you should. A side benefit of this is that we'll be releasing more content which will be a complete surprise to you, so keep your eyes peeled for updates!

We'd also like to clear up a few issues surrounding the free game. RuneScape is different from all other MMOs in that the free game has an epic amount of content (we'd estimate over 2,000 hours worth to get all your skills up to 99 and complete all the quests) and isn't merely a demo for the members’ version. If anything, we see the members’ version as an expansion pack for those that really love the game and we feel both games are substantive in their own right. I want to apologise for habitually over-promoting the benefits of membership to our free players. I strongly believe if you love the free game you will equally love the members’ content and that is sufficient promotion to me. If you can't enjoy the free game in its own right then we're not doing our jobs properly. We will continue to improve the free game and, crucially, make it as fun as possible because we know that this is the way that everyone first discovers RuneScape.

We also have a long-term commitment to improving all the aspects of the game – from overall graphical enhancements through to new gameplay mechanics.

Another thing that has cropped up in recent times, which we'd like to clear up once and for all, is the common belief that RuneScape is a game aimed at kids. This is absolutely not the case. We can see how this view has fostered, however, thanks to our over-zealous chat filter, Quick Chat worlds, “dumbing down” of certain bits of humour and storylines, as well as certain areas of the game like the Stronghold of Security, which do provide solid security advice but perhaps come across as a little condescending to the vast majority of our older players. I unreservedly apologise for this and to rectify this we have already removed a number of words from the chat filter and are currently working on reviewing and amending any content we feel is too kid-focused.

RuneScape benefits from one of the most diverse player demographics in the industry and is truly reflective of the worldwide population. As a responsible company we have had to comply with certain regulatory obligations to ensure online safety for any younger players and as a result we introduced Quick Chat for players under a certain age, but this was to meet our legal responsibilities rather than who the game is designed for, it’s probably also worth noting that we have a total of 4 Quick Chat worlds in a total of 165 RuneScape worlds. As I said earlier, we are gamers at heart and we try to design games and content which we ourselves would enjoy playing. I’m an active RuneScape player and I’m ever so slightly over 21 :)

We are also committed to working with our fans in the RuneScape community to make the game a more enjoyable place to be. We will be running community events, tournaments and JMod participation in-game to provide more support to you and make RuneScape an even better place to be.

To kick things off in this new era of openness I'm going to be answering your questions. For the next week we will open a thread in the News and Announcements forum for questions, and in a week’s time I will post answers to a selection of your questions. So please feel free to drop-in and ask a question or tell me what you think of the game.

Runescape Music

The New Music System:

The bards of Runescape have been handed the task of creating a music player that is simpler to use, offering more advanced options. Well, they have certainly managed it, and this week sees its release!

Previously, travelling across the world of RuneScape meant frequent changes of music, often playing only the early parts of songs. Now, our new music system plays songs all the way to the end, at which point a new song is chosen that is appropriate to your area - provided you have unlocked it of course!

There are a couple of exceptions to this rule: if you unlock a track by entering a new area, the system will interrupt your current song in favour of the new tune, ensuring that you hear all new songs. Also, if you encounter a boss NPC or start a cutscene with added music, the system will, of course, interrupt your current song to play the appropriate tune to accompany the action.

You still have the ability to manually choose your tunes by clicking on the song name. This will, of course, interrupt the current song to play your chosen tune, as it always has. We have also kept the 'loop song on/off' button (which now looks a little like a recycle symbol) so you can listen to your favourite song repeatedly.

Song Unlocking Information:

We have added a right-click option to locked song names in the music player, which will tell you exactly where to unlock it. This means that you don't need to hunt through the Knowledge Base to find out where "Throne of the Demon" can be unlocked, for instance.

The 500 Song Emote:

We have introduced a brand new emote, which is only available to those true adventurers who have unlocked 500 songs. As soon as this 500th song has been unlocked, you will be able to use the brand new 'Air Guitar' emote, with added sound - enjoy!

Sound Effect Improvements:

We have revisited many areas and quests, adding missing sounds and making various improvements to them. As you travel the world, you should notice new and improved sound effects, including:

Torches crackling in caves and dungeons
Floorboards creaking in Draynor Manor
Improved sounds for doors
Sounds for lighting/extinguishing lanterns and candles
Various improved background sounds

There are too many changes to list here, but hopefully the extra atmospherics will make your game experience more immersive and interesting!

Improvements to existing songs:

We have also made improvements to many existing songs and instruments in the game, some of which are obvious, some more subtle; see if you can find which ones have been changed!

We hope you enjoy the changes we've made to Runescape's audio this week. We are open to future suggestions, so keep them coming in!

Edgeville Dungeon area improvement:

Venture, if you dare, into the depths of the newly-improved Edgeville Dungeon. Whether you want to dice with chaos druids or stand tall amongst giants then come on down, the graphically improved dungeon awaits you. Who knows, you might make it out alive - unlike some of the other inhabitants!

In other news...

Balance has been restored! Players can now obtain Summoning XP from the Tears of Guthix minigame. Genie lamps can also grant your Summoning wishes in a similar fashion.

Kebbit fur no longer floats when dropped on the floor. Now, it actually obeys the laws of gravity and will appear at the correct height.

The Carrallangar teleport in the Ancient Magicks spellbook wasn't teleporting to the right place. This has been fixed and you should now teleport to the correct location instead of arriving slightly further to the west.

The ogres and spiders outside of Oo'glog have been relocated slightly, as they were scaring the chinchompas away. Players can now hunt these creatures without as much interruption.

Pawya and Grenwall Hunter Creatures

The pine forests of Isafdar provide a fresh hunting ground for intrepid box-trappers.

Two recently-discovered beasts have survived by avoiding the traps, pits and dire wolves of Isafdar, so will prove pretty elusive, even for experienced and knowledgeable hunters.

Pawyas are timid creatures that scour the forest in search of fruit to eat, hiding underground at the slightest noise.

It is rumoured that they are particularly fond of papaya - something of a rare commodity in their native environment.

Grenwalls, on the other hand, are carnivores with limitless appetites and a prickly attitude.

They will compete with you by hunting and devouring any pawya unfortunate enough to cross their path.

In order to outwit these tricky critters, experienced hunters will need to hone their skills by using a suitable bait to trap them...

Those who do succeed in trapping a grenwall will have access to a hefty slice of XP, as well as the spines that cover the creature's body.

Their tough, rigid nature makes them ideal for use as arrow shafts. In particular, the proprietors of the Yanille and Nardah Hunter stores are extremely keen to get their mitts on these items, so there may be some profit in it for you.

Unbalanced Trade Removal:

From this moment on, no unbalanced trades may be made. This applies to every player, on every world, no matter if you are free-to-play or a member.

We would like to remind you that the Grand Exchange is a great option for buying or selling items, where you can purchase items at 5% above or below their market price. Additionally, balanced trades are still possible.

New 30,000gp Trade Margin!:

Note: The following changes only apply if you are on a members' world.

Today, we have made a change to the planned 3,000gp trade margin for today's release. Instead, we are basing your trade margin on the number of Quest Points you have, giving you more flexibility when making balanced trades.

Having read your Forum posts and noted all of your feedback, we have come to the decision that you should have a margin of up to 30,000gp!

Originally, the total value of any items being given in a balanced trade would have had to be within a margin of 3,000gp of the items being received. Instead, we are increasing this margin according to the number of quests you have completed. As an example, a player who has 150 Quest Points will be able to receive items with a market value of 21,000gp above or below the items they are offering.

No matter how many Quest Points you have, it will take 15 minutes before your gp limit resets.

Any individual trade is limited by the lower of the two players' limits. For example, if a player with 100 Quest Points is trading with a player on 30 Quest Points, then both players will be limited to a 3,000gp difference every 15 minutes.

Your limit increases for every Quest Point that you gain. As more quests are introduced, with more Quest Points, we may decide to increase the above values.

Duel Arena:

It is not only trades that are affected by Quest Points. We have also increased the staking cap for Duel Arena, in the same way. Using the table in the '3,000gp Rule Changes' section, you will be able to find out your new limit for gaining or losing items in staked duels. This does not apply to duel tournaments.

This increase also applies to the Rat Pits minigames.

The Contact! quest sent you on your adventurous way to face the followers of Scabaras, making grim discoveries of death and intrigue beneath the desert. In Dealing with Scabaras there has been a reaction to these events, dragging you kicking and screaming into a tale of revenge and redemption.

Your journey begins with a mysterious corpse that needs identification - but all is not as it seems. Spurred on by duty and revenge, you will travel to uncharted eastern deserts - dealing with folk who are cautious, disreputable and stone-headed - eventually approaching your journey's end. Here you will be confronted by a shadowy foe who requires you to be at the very peak of your powers.

Treasure seekers will find a new stomping-ground patrolled by strange creatures in the ancient ruins and desert sand. Can you resist straying from your path?

For many of you, however, revenge and loot are not the only rewards that inspire you, and there will be ample chances to gain the lost knowledge of the desert. What drives the followers of Scabaras to their violent ways? What exactly is Simon Templeton up to? Why are there so many archaeologists wandering the lands? Is Osman quite what he seems? You can hope to learn more about these mysteries as you busy yourself under the burning sun.

In other news...

The Christmas event has now been removed from the game, but you can still throw snowballs at your friends. Players who managed to obtain a snow globe from the Snow Queen can store it safely in their POH costume room toy box.

We've also updated the crocodiles to create a snappy and sharp(toothed) new look, alongside some improved voracious vultures, hungry for your bones! Mess with them at your peril...

Runescape The changing Online Game

I don't know if I like all of the changes that have been made, waht i do know is that it sure has changed the joy I got out of the game, not much of that anymore.

I will continue to play the game, but, my character (lvl 37) whom I spent a year getting my mining up so I could mine Runite, now cannot survive to mine it. I tried many times to get there to mine only to get zapped before i even get there, really sad.
The following has been taken from the updates supplied by Jagex

This month will begin with an important change that you are all aware of: unbalanced trade will be removed on Wednesday, 2nd of January. As you may have read in the Development Diary: RuneScape vs Real-world Trading, this will be a change that reduces the threat of bots, gold sellers and scammers dramatically. With a fatal blow delivered to real-world trading, we can focus more on updates like three quests in one month!

We will be relaxing our trade limitations on the same day as unbalanced trade removal. Thanks to your feedback, we will be basing our new limits on how many Quest Points you have. This will give you increased flexibility when trading.

Our first quest this month continues the desert storyline and introduces a bit of an insect theme in January. One of your allies met an untimely demise at the pincers of a large and aggressive bad guy in the Contact! quest. Will you seek revenge and cleanse the world of bugs like a big can of insect repellent? Or will you take the advice of the local priest and try to talk your way out, man-to-mandible? It might just be the lesser of two weevils. Creep and crawl through the desert, raid deserted dungeons and fight louse-y beasties, but remember - insects have feelings too! Especially when you squish ‘em.

Some way north-west of Sophanem, there is a bit of a buzz in the quiet town of Taverley. For one, Guthix has seen fit to give his loyal subjects some crisp new robes, and their rocky buildings a bit of a wax. For two, some strange growlings have been coming from Pikkupstix's house. In the second of this month's quests, you will be roped into dealing with a rabbit-wolf-reindeer-bird-type...thing. But how do you defeat rabbit-wolf-reindeer-bird-type...things? A clue may be found in the title of this Wolf Whistle quest, which introduces key aspects of our next update...

What has 110 eyes, 5 horns, a pair of antlers and a fishbowl? The Chaos Elemental's girlfriend? No, it's Summoning! That's right, the stampede is coming, with scores of animals for you to pet, raise, fight and befriend! We don't want to go into any more detail than the Development Diaries have, but, needless to say, whether you are a skiller or a combat-fiend, Summoning will offer you a familiar for every occasion...

...and what better occasion than the opening of a huge multiway combat dungeon, brimming with a huge range of beasties? Bring your combat familiar so that you can use their Steel of Legends or Insane Ferocity to chew through ranks of creatures and speed you on your way towards that Summoning skillcape! Watch out, though - the area is littered with misfiring portals that are about as reliable as a cartful of Morrisanes.

You would be forgiven for thinking that January is just for Summoning. Oh no,no,no - Hunter will get a look in too! Budding trappers will find many treats within the Summoning skill itself, but they will also find an extension to their skill in Isafdar, with the introduction of the grenwall and pawya creatures. These are two high-level Hunter creatures that give a boost to Ranged and Farming - if you can catch them, of course.

Your Hunter, alongside your Woodcutting and Firemaking, will be called upon in our third and final January quest. In it, you will be asking yourself several questions. How do I clear a mud bath of flies? Why am I sleeping on a pork chop? Is an ogre massage a good idea? And what are platypodes? Take time out from your adventuring to help an entrepreneur set up a spa resort deep in ogre country. There might even be a mudpack in it for you.

There's hardly room in the month to tuck in some popular website offerings. Expect the last of our Summoning Development Diaries and wallpapers, a Lores and Histories, a Castle Wars wallpaper and the customary Players' Gallery and Postbag from the Hedge, sprinkled liberally amongst the updates above. It really is a January to get excited about!

Runescape: Trade and Drop Changes

10 December 2007 - Trade and Drop Changes

You will be aware, from newsposts and this week's Development Diary, of real-world trading and the danger it poses to RuneScape. To solve this once and for all, we are tweaking what happens when you drop items, updating the trade system to warn you about unbalanced trades and planning a final adjustment to the trading system, in the first week of January.

We strongly advise you to read this week's Development Diary before this newspost, so that you can fully understand why we have made these vitally important changes.

Unbalanced Trade:

To remove real-world trading from RuneScape, we must stop the gold sellers' ability to function. We believe that the best and only way to do this will be to stop unbalanced trade.

We consider an unbalanced trade to be one that is not equivalent, with a trader receiving items that are much more valuable than those they are giving away. For example, a party hat traded for a bucket is quite obviously an unbalanced trade.

For a trade to be 'balanced', the total value of the items being given must be within 3,000gp of the items being received. For example you WOULD be allowed to trade an item worth 15,000gp for an item worth 17,000gp (because the DIFFERENCE is less than 3,000gp). You will be limited to a 3,000gp gain or loss every 15 minutes.

We are aware that many of you will want to prepare for this change. So, initially, we are just going to make the trade system WARN about unbalanced trades, but it will still allow the trade to go through. This seriously reduces any opportunities for scamming, but still gives you a chance to get used to how it works, organise your items, hand back borrowed stuff, and give Christmas presents. Then, in the first week of January, we will change it to simply not allow unbalanced trades outside of the 3,000gp limit. We will be reminding you when the January date approaches, so that you can be best prepared.

For certain categories of account (mostly new accounts) we are actually implementing the trade restriction immediately. This allows us to stop a large chunk of the cheating immediately, since most of the real-world traders are using new accounts due to their previous ones being banned. For the vast majority of players, the trade restriction will come into effect in the first week of January.

We'd like to reassure you that we plan to keep a thriving player-trading economy. We are certainly NOT planning to remove trading from the game! It's only very unbalanced trades which will be affected. You won't be forced to use the Grand Exchange to trade either, although that will remain a superb means of buying or selling any of your items.

The 3,000gp rule means that you can still help each other out by offering cheaper items for free. We are certainly not going to stop you giving a Fishing rod or an antipoison potion to those who need it or, indeed, offering inflated amounts for items you want in a hurry, within the 3,000gp limit.

This shouldn't overly affect legitimate players, as the aim is to make sure there is no reason to NEED to do an unbalanced trade (more on how we have tried to ensure this below). It stops the real-world traders dead, as there is no way they can make delivery of purchased gold/items any more. Our aim is to make gold-selling so difficult that gold sellers and farmers are forced to leave RuneScape forever.

Covert Trades:

Any real-world trader will respond to the removal of unbalanced trade by investigating ways round it. They will be looking for alternative ways to transfer gold other than trading. We are one step ahead, however, and have already researched every possible means for them to do so and amended them over the past few months.

We have previously adjusted the Duel Arena, Party Room, shops, etc. to prevent them being used to covertly transfer purchased gold.

One way of covertly transferring gold has not been mentioned yet, and we have addressed it this month. By dropping an item - through death or just discarding it - a real-world trader was able to make an unbalanced trade.

For the removal of unbalanced trade to be successful we must, therefore, change the way that player-dropped items work.

Discarded Item Changes

One way to fix it would be to make all discarded items invisible to other players. After all, a real-world trader would find it difficult to offer another player a stack of gold if their customer could not see it, let alone pick it up!

We've not gone quite that far. Instead, we have decided to just limit the visible amount. When you discard items by dropping them on the floor, they will only become visible to other players if their market value is less than 3,000 coins. Items with a market value less than this will become visible to other players after a delay (like before) - unless you've already reached your limit of 3,000 coins worth of items on the floor in a 15 minute period. This doesn't prevent you from discarding unwanted items or picking them up again; the change only restricts the ability of other players to see your discarded stuff.

There are no restrictions to how many items you can drop and how many of them are visible to you - this is only a change to the way your discarded items appear to other players.

Items Dropped on Death Changes

For the same reasons as mentioned above, we have made changes to how items are dropped on death.

When you die, (unless in the Bounty Hunter area - more on this later), you will leave a temporary gravestone behind. While the gravestone remains, your dropped items will not despawn, giving you a bit of time to run back and collect them. Other players will not be able to see or take items from your gravestone.

Your friends can make your gravestone remain for longer, either by repairing it when it starts to crumble or by expending Prayer points to bless it. Your stone can be maintained this way for up to a maximum of an hour. This will give you more time to return and pick up from where you left off.

Previous Updates:

As mentioned before, we have already released several updates that have paved the way for this change. We've tried really, really hard to make sure that for everything affected by this week's changes, we have provided a replacement means of doing the same thing, which is at least as good.

Runescape update

Duel Arena:

We have opened the doors of the Duel Arena to free players, so that they can get a taste of intense one-on-one duelling. Staked and friendly duels will be available, with a number of options to choose from.

The stake restrictions that apply to members' duels also apply to free-to-play duels. The Duel Tournament area is still members' only, however.

Additional bank space:

We have decided to increase the number of bank spaces that everyone has! Members will now find that they have 32 extra slots to fill with items bought from the Grand Exchange, future Summoning trinkets or any other use that can be found for them.

Free players have not been left out, either. Eight more slots have been made available, so enjoy filling your newly-expanded bank!

In other news...

Due to recent 'player stock' price changes in shops, we've introduced a feature to some 'notable' NPCs. Jiminua just north-west of Tai Bwo Wannai and Ordan at the Blast Furnace will un-note certain items for a small price. Jiminua will un-note pure essence and Ordan will un-note any ore that is sold in his shop.

The level 85 'Teleblock' spell has been replaced with the new 'Bounty Locate' spell as there is no longer a use for the old spell within Bounty Hunter. The new spell 'Bounty Locate' will teleport you close to your allocated target within the new Bounty Hunter area.

A bank pin has been added to the Grand Exchange to protect any expensive items you have for sale, or items you've successfully bought but not yet collected.

When you leave the area of the Hill Giants and past the ladder, heading east, down the corridor there are two kinds of Hobgblins level 28 and level 42.
The level 28 do not drop a lot of good stuff, they drop limproots once in a while, some coins and Goblin malls.
If you pick up and bury the bones the are worth 5 points on you prayer level.

The level 42 Hobgoblins drop Cosmic runes, Water runes, Body runes. They also drop gold pieces, and Limproots which are needed to make strength potions if you have Red Spider eggs.

Catablepon level 68

On level three there are Level 68 catablepons, which are hard to destroy and can hit you with a spell that takes away some of your strength.

You should take food with you as they are quite nasty. If you have a strength potion it will help some as well.

barbarian village Stronghold of security ( the third level

Down on the third level you can find level 37 scorpions to fight, they do not drop anything, at least I have not seen them drop anything.

They are good if you are working on bringing your levels up.

Levels to work on are your Ranging , if you look around you may be able to fine and area that you can use to attack them and the cannot attack you.

Strength, Defense and attack are ones that you can work on without a lot of other players there.

It is a good idea to take food with you as these guys can hit you back.

just a note here : the levels below Barbarian Village each have two parts , the first one is when you go down the ladder (they ask you if you really want to go there) after you go down the ladder there will be a portal nearby which will take you to the other part of this level.

You can take some time and explore each of the parts of this level to see what is there.

The Stronghold of security

If you are around Barbarian Village just west of Varrock and if you want some adventure, talk to Litara, she will show you how to get down into the stronghold of security or you can just click on the hole which is in the middle of a pile of rocks.

You can mine here as well for Coal, copper and tin.
Level One:

the first place you come to after you go down through the hole is a room with doors leading to other parts of the stronghold, on the other side of the doors, depending which way you go you will find goblins, level 5, level 11 and level 13.

You can pick the one you want to fight, they do not attack you but will retaliate after you attack them.

They drop bronze arrows, bronze full helm and some other things, if your range level is low you can hide behind a fence to shoot the goblins and they cannot hit you. Pick up the bones and bury them, this will help your prayer level with 5 points for each bones you bury.

As you go further along to different areas you will find Minataurs at level 12 and level 27. One area has wolves and they are level 11, I did not see them drop anything.

in the north east area you will find level 16 and level 25 goblins. In all of the areas the drops range from bronze and iron arrows to daggers and bronze full helm.

All these areas have places to hide behind to work on your ranging without having to much damage done to you.

To go down to Level 2 just got through the portal you saw in the first room.

This is Part One of keeping your Online Gaming Accounts safe.

This entry applies to everything online that requires a password to gain access - not just games.

Email accounts, Online Gambling accounts, Online Banking accounts - anything you log into over the Internet can be subject to attack by hackers.

The more you know about the scams in place, the safer you and your online accounts are.

Spyware, Keylogging "trojan" programs on your computer and even your own wish to 'fast track' your advancement are serious threats when it comes to the privacy of your personal information, and security of your online gaming characters.

The three major ways you'll find your online accounts 'hacked into' include:

Visiting a 'rogue' website that exploits flaws in Internet Explorer and plants a keylogger or password sniffer on your computer without your awareness (note, anyone who uses your computer could do this unknowingly).

Having your trust abused by unscrupulous individuals who claim to work for the company providing the online service and then demand your username and password with a threat of banishment

Purposely giving out your account information (username and password) with the hopes of being able to "hack" the system yourself, usually to gain virtual items, money or levels without following the "usual" route.

Avoid Known Browser Exploits - Use Firefox, Not Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is the world's most popular browser for those who use Microsoft Windows as their operating system, specifically because Internet Explorer comes installed with Windows computers, and most users (especially novice ones) won't think to replace or even upgrade it. Unfortunately, because IE is so popular, and because so few users keep their software up-to-date, many hackers have focused their time developing programs and websites to exploit Internet Explorer's known flaws. There are a LOT of browser exploits out there.

While all Windows users should visit WindowsUpdate.com once a month to catch up on Microsoft's various security updates for the entire Operating System, Internet Surfers who wish to protect their online information should strongly consider moving away from Internet Explorer.

Scan For Spyware And Keyloggers Regularly

While replacing a highly-targetted-for-hacking browser with one less focused on is an important first step, it's also important to acknowledge that hackers are constantly releasing new software and websites and trying new tricks to steal your online accounts from you. For this reason, you should be scanning your computer on a regular basis (at least once a month) to detect and remove spyware, data harvesters and keyloggers from your Windows PC.

Download Lavasoft's Ad Aware SE (for your home computer, there's a free version). Then, make sure all aspects of it are updated (when you first download it, there may still be updates you need to download immediately after installation) and then let it scan your drives. This may take a while if you, like me, have large drives. It's worth the wait but you might want to let it scan overnight if you've never scanned before. Remove *ALL* of the things that Ad Aware SE finds. You may have to right-click the list and choose "select all" before proceeding if you have a long list. I had a friend with over 700 items in this list the first time we cleaned his computer up, and once they were all removed, his browsing sped up tremendously again.

Download Spyware Search & Destroy (these can both be found in Tucows directory) and do the same things as were done for Ad Aware in the previous paragraph. I find that these two programs work nicely together to keep my drive clean, with my doing weekly scans.

Never PURPOSELY Share Your Account Information Or Password

Any web link you get from an email that brings you to a page where you're supposed to enter sensitive information like your credit card, bank info or passwords, don't do it! Banks and other service providers would NEVER contact you that way.

Any instructions you receive about sending an email with specific details enclosed (usually under the guise of "I can upgrade your stats/equipment/cash" if you just follow these instructions...), examine the information carefully - if you're sending out your username and password, they're stealing your account!

Even just giving out your username can encourage hacking of your account at times. If your username is not already visible to others, don't give it to anyone, as they may try to crack your password with brute force (ie: a program that has a list of dictionary words it uses as passwords in login attempts).

Be Careful What Addons And Hacks You Download

While some online games allow for third-party software to be "added on" to improve your enjoyment of the game, some games do not. RuneScape, for example, has no legitimate addons which do not violate the Terms of Service you agreed upon when signing up, and very often any addons you'll download are actually keyloggers that enable someone else to steal your account entirely.

Games like World of Warcraft, however, have a thriving "UI Mod/Addons" community and many advanced users download and install .LUA scripts which work with WoW to change launch bars, introduce in-game schedulers, track information while gaming, etc. In this case, the general rule is this:

If the Addon you're downloading contains an executable file (in the form of a .bat file or a .exe or .com file), be very careful about running it. Executable files can easily contain keyloggers specifically added to steal your account information.

Keep Your Virus Checker Up To Date

And finally, as is standard these days, get a virus scanner that runs on your machine all the time it's on, and make sure the virus scanner keeps up to date. I personally use Norton with its LiveUpdate feature, but you may prefer something else, or your computer may prefer something else ;) I've had virus programs severely slow down my machine's performance and even crash it, while on other machines that virus program works just fine. Do what works, and what doesn't cause you headaches, and then make sure it scans at least once a month.

Keep your computer clean. It's an important step in protecting your personal, private information from those of unscrupulous internet users!

He shows up in a great number of places, just about everyplace you play.

He always give you some small token and then poof he is gone.

The Mime

The latest Random Event is Runescape.

I have been doing a lot of mining and the normal random events come around every once in a while.

This event starts with a character transporting you to a room with a stage. You are on this stage with another person.

There is a spotlight on both you and the other person who is a Mime.

The moderator, ( for the lack of a better name), gets the mime to do a move, a spotlight is on the Mime while he does his move. Then a screen comes up and you have to pick out the move that the mime has made.

The screen that comes up has 8 choices, you have to pick out the one that the mime has made.

The gestures the Mime make are fairly hard to make out. The spotlight switches to you as you try to mimic the Mime.

If you get it wrong, the Mime will make another move which you will have to try to mimic.

I failed on a three tries and got 3 right and was sent back to the spot where I was mining.

If this random event give out gifts like the others,I did not get one. Must have got to many wrong. lol

Mine Iron Ore Mine in El kharid

If you wan to mine Iron ore, the mine at El Kharid is an excellent place to MIne for it.

there are a lot of Iron to chose from, one rock by itself, to a group of three which is the best place to mine iron if you are trying to advance your mining levels the fastest way.

Some of the Groups of two rock are set up so you have to move from one rock to the other and some are set up so you don't move your character, just swing back and forth.

Mining Adamanite in the El Kharid Mine

Mining in El Kharid is good and has everything you want to mine. Silver, Tin, Coal, Iron, Mithril, Adamantite, and Copper.

The best thing about mining at the El Kharid mine site is, there are not a lot of miners there later in the evening.

There are two Adamantite in the north corner fo the mine, as there are not a lot of miners with levels high enough to mine "Addy". You need level 70 or better to do this.

This is the only place that I have found that has silver ore.

Pick the Right one

A new Random event.

While mining coal it Barbarian Village, minding my own business , then some dude teleported me to some place with a screen in front of me with 3 items spinning around and told me to pick out the one that was different.
Did the first one, got it right, had to do another, got it right , then the third , got it right and was rewarded with 1000 gold pieces.

teleported back to Barbarian Village to continue my mining again.

This happened a second time but I only had to pick the one that was different once and I was sent back.

This time I got an uncut ruby, nice.

another random event

The latest random event that I have seen or had the pleasure of trying to get through, was while I was trying to kill Hill Giants.
I was taken to what looked like a big round field with chickens running around it.
There was a charactor who I was instruced to talk to, he wanted me to go and get him a chicken with a split tail.
Of course he wanted me to kill it and bring it to him.
I looked around and the were chickens without spit tails, and some with their tails split in three parts.
There were others to but I did not pay enough attention to remember them all.
I got the one he wanted (split tail) and I was rewaded with a Uncut Diamond.

To get out of there I had to find the portal and go through it to return.

I don't know if this random events happens in other places in the game.

Evil Twin

Had a chance to meet up with the twins again and there have been some changes since I saw them last.

They are no longer blonds as they were the last time, brunettes now.

There has been an improvement in the way you pick up the evil twin by the neck and take her to the cell in the corner of the room.

The first time I was there, there were no markings on the floor to show you where the overhead Tongs were.

It is a litlle easier to catch up to her as she moves around the room.

The 3 other characters in the room do not look a lot like the evil twin, which makes it faster to catch her.

New Hill Giants

There has been an upgrade in the Hill Giants, they look bigger and uglier than ever.

They walk on a floor of planks and have different amount of hair on there heads, some have a strip down the middle of their heads , some are bald and some have hair and they are all big and ugly.

If you are looking for them , go northwest of Varrock along side of the river and you will find a small building. To open the door you will need a brass key, from there you go down the ladder and turn west to find the hill giants.

Because they are easy prey, there is a lot of competition for them.

Rangers are not liked very well here by some of the players.

The twins, Good and Evil

I had the good luck (or bad luck if you are so enclined) to get zapped to another world where I met a great looking lady and she claimed to be the good sister and wanted me to catch her wicked twin sister.

She told me to look at her very carefully so I would know which one was the wicked sister.

I was presented with a room with 4 female characters in it, two looked just about identical, the other two did not look the same at all so you left them alone.

You had to decide which of the two remaining girls you thought was the wicked one, once that was decided, you had to catch the chosen one with a set of three finger tongs which you had to drop down on and pick her up by the neck , (traction for her) kicking and screaming and drop her into a fenced in area in the corner of the room.

You only had two chances to get this done and if you failed i don't know where you would have been sent for failing. :-) I got it right on the first try after much study of the two characters.

This was made harder as she kept on walking around the room and you had to move the tongs over her and then drop them down to catch her, took me a long time to finish this task but when it was done I was rewarded with 2 cut diamonds.

The Cave, another Random event

Yesterday I was chosen for another event like the Frog Queen and the military guy.

Some big dude called my name and before I could click on him, everything faded away and then I was in and old looking arcade game with What looked like posts with flashing rings around them.

Only one would flash at a time, the object was to walk over and touch the one that was flashing.
For this you got 1 point of the 10 you need to get out of there.

You have to touch them as they flash until you have the 10 points, then you can get out of there.

I tried running to touch them faster but it did not seem to work.

There are two big guys there gaurding the exit from the place, once you have the 10 points you can go in between them to the exit. If you try to leave without the 10 points they will likley stop you from leaving.

The reward for getting the 10 points was better than some of the other bot checkers, I got 2 cut Diamonds. :-)

Runescape Strategies

One of the strategies used when playing Runescape , is to hire characters to do all of the mining for you. All you do is to buy up the material mined by them by paying them the least amount of coins as you can get away with.

This sounds like the real world.

If you have been playing this game for very long you have seen players with very low combat levels mining, you will see the same character over and over and thier levels do not seen to go up week after week.

I have been trying to work on all of my levels so I can defend myself.

Some time ago you could go through Barbarian Village and not get attacked by Barbarian women or the Barbarian man who are both level 10.

Now, with one of the last updates they will attack you if you are a lower level.
even if you are fighting them and a lower level character comes by they will chase him, also i have seen them gang up on a lower level player.

You do not see very many level 3 or 4 miners at this mining location.

You can mine coal and tin here.

Have you met the Sarge

The other night I was mining rune essence and running back and forth between the bank and the rune store when I was teleported to a room with four beds and a military looking dude ordering me to jump on one of the beds and do pushups.

I jumped onto one of the beds and found myself doing sit ups, wrong bed, went to the next one and was jogging.

By this time he was giving me new orders to do jumping jacks, jumped onto another bed and was doing pushups, at least I knew where that bed was.

To make a long story short as he was barking new orders I was able to get on the right bed as his orders were given and was given a prize for all the exersize I had to do.

Since it was a military man giving the orders the prize was a Camo Helment , I have not seen these around before so I will be on the lookout for other players who have them.

Hundredth Quest - Recipe for Disaster!

The cook in Lumbridge has a surprisingly small number of ingredients to hand in his kitchen, possibly as a result of an endless stream of newcomers with light fingers taking anything that isn't nailed down.

Luckily, in the past a kind Cook's Assistant was willing to help him in his culinary duties, but now a problem has appeared that could spell... a Recipe For Disaster!

Almost all members can attempt to solve his tricky predicament, and be rewarded accordingly, but only the very elite of questers will be able to put paid to his problem permanently!

Players willing to take on the challenge of this, our hundredth quest in game so far and possibly the largest yet, should head immediately to Lumbridge Castle's kitchen, and help out their old employer the Cook immediately...

In other news, some players will be asked to help out Leo, the short sighted Gravedigger.

He's buried in some serious trouble and needs his problems laying to rest.

Can you help identify which grave is which? This new random event has a new costume to collect and some new emotes for the players to unlock if they can solve the puzzle.

Frog Queen again

Met up with the Frog Queen again but this time I did not get sent to the swamp as a frog.

I was able to find her, after talking to a couple of her helpers and as a reward, she gave me a token to take to the clothing shop in Varrock, where I was able to get a free costumn. Since I am male I chose the frog prince to wear.

I do not use cheats as I want the learning of the game be as intended, by doing all of the aspects of the game.
Even being called a noob as I am playing the game, this is where we start unless we cheat.
At the end of the day what have you really gained if it is by cheating, cheating yourself.

Frog Queen

Runescape always seem to come up with something to make you more aware of the need to be respectful to others when playing the game.

I wonder if the message is, to do that in real life?

I was at Barbarian Village trying to smash the level 7 Barbarian and the level 8 Barbarian Women into oblivion. I was not paying attention to anything else, as there were a lot of others doing the same thing. Lot of competition for each barbarian.

All if a sudden there were frogs all over the place, I did not pay any attention to them, ( they were in the way) and kept on whacking barbarians, I guess I was rude to them for I found myself in a swamp hopping around as a frog.

I am sure that there were others who were rude but I did not meet them in the Frog Swamp.

I had lost everything so I thought so I checked with some of the frogs and they were happy that I got smoked.
I finally hopped around till I found the Frog queen and said I was sorry for being so rude.

She scolded me, and zoom I was back to where I come from without losing anything, but had gained some knowledge. Thats a good thing.

Looking for gold coins in runescape is a very consumeing quest, just the same in real life, we are allways trying to get rich so we can buy things to make ourselves more powerful.

Some of the players in Runescape work hard at bringing thier levels up so they can use that to prey on the lower levels , less work this way.

Shantay Pass

Just south of Al Kharid is Shantay Pass.

I thought I would check out that area since I was there, but I could not get through the gate.

Tried the controls but they did not work, at least they did not work for me.

It generally tells you if it is only a members only.

The Bank there is not the normal bank and I could not open the chest there, at least the gaurds there did not attack me.

I checked all along the fence to the water and all along the other side up as far as the Duel
Arena and could not find a way through that way as well.

Any one know where the location of the Jolly Bear Inn?

El Kharid

If you are in the area of El Kharid you should check out the general store there, this is the best place I have found so far for leather protective clothing.

I had a full set and got zapped by some guy throwing what looked like fire balls at me, I did not last long enough to get a good look at them. Woke up without much of anything left.

The long walks between points give you time to build up your strength for running.

One of the other features of this game are the treasues that are in some of the crates inside buildings and tents. Bookcases also sometimes give up a treasure but most of the time tell you there is nothing other than reading material there.

There are things stashed all over the place but you have to look for them, big part of the game.

Quests in Runescape

If you have been wondering around Runescape, looking to see what is around, you should get involved in the Quests.

They progress from simple to the very difficult.

They are a great way to get to know your way around the Runescape world, here you can meet all kinds of people from all over the world and the main language is English, allthough it is shortened up a great deal to make typing faster.

this Computer language is evolving all of the time , it likely drives English teachers crazy when they see it. :-)

I have only done a few but they take a lot of time and a lot of walking but the rewards are worth it.
There are a few scammers out there but if you remember you instructions and who you are to contact along the way you should have no problems.

As you progress in the quests you will be able to do more than one at a time, this will save you from visiting the same places over again.

Underground trails

I checked out the the trapdoor just west of Lumbridge and went through to the far end and past the zombies running as fast as I could, just like running the gauntlet.

At the far end there was and exit, up the ladder I found myself just west of the bank in Draynor Village .

This route was much faster than going up the trails and around the area where the gaurds are, I am not strong enough to take them on yet, but sooner or later I will be, then its revenge time.

I went fishing and was doing just fine when angry fish came up and ate my net, so much for fishing.

Good thing I had a few coins so I could go over to Port Sarim to the fishing store and buy a new small net.

getting you levels up

working on getting your levels up will take a quite a long time if you want to work on all of the levels as you go along.

If you are only going to work on a couple, I would work on strength and defence first since you will be doing a lot of killing to get all the goodies that are dropped as you kill various creatures.

Your hit level will go up as you fight, at first you will be able to go up levels fairly quickly, but they are progressivly harder to reach. Fishing and woodcutting are the same, the more you cut and fish the longer it takes to get to the next level.

I can't a amagine how long it takes to reach level 90 or 100, but you do see some of those players wandering around the free world.

I have been able to survive a little better lately by staying away from some places.
Until I get my levels up high enough to take on some of the higher level creatures I will have to keep my run energy up at 100%

Fishing for Bigger Fish

Fishing, cooking and cutting wood is the way to keep healthy, so you can work on other skills like fighting.
The basics can also be boring but are necessary to build a good base to play this game.

I got tired of eating anchovies and shrimp ( they don't keep your health up to long ) but they kept me going as I tried to collect enough coin to buy a fishing rod and some bait.

I found the fishing shop in Port Sarim which is a little west and a bit south of Draynor Village.

I bought a fishing rod and stocked up on bait and headed back to the fishing hole south of Draynor Village.

I checked out the map and fished west of Port Sarim, fishing was good but it is a long way way to the nearest bank, even with running it takes a bit of time.

You soon run out of energy for running and the only way I have found to get the running energy back up, is by walking (tried eating and that did not work).

The Run feature

If you are checking out runescape and are a low level player, like me, practice using your run feature. It could save you from being killed in some cases.

I opened up a trap door on the ground behind Lumbridge Village went down the ladder and went along a narrow walkway passing by some Zombies, got about halfway down the hall and they started to attack me.
It was soon apparent that I was going to die if I did not do something.
I remembered the run feature, turned it on and ran to the ladder and out. Survived for the time being.

That is another place I will go back to when I get my levels up .

Headed down to the fishing hole south of Draynor Village, along the wayI cut down a couple of trees and took the wood with me, for cooking fish.

Found out I can use a fire that has allready been lit by someone else for cooking.

Used my net to catch some anchovies and shrimp, cooked them up, ate a bunch to get my strength back up so now I can go fight Trolls and Goblins and see what good things they drop.

Lumbridge to Draynor Village

After I have been killed and sent back to Lumbridge to start over again,I thought I would be very carefull on how I would go to the bank after collecting up some coins and other good stuff.

I went by the jail and the gaurd came out and started to beat on me but I did get across the raod and he stopped.

Since that time I stay outside of the territory that he is gaurding, later on when I get to a higher level I will go back and return the favour.

After depositing my meager amount of goodies in the bank in Draynor Village, when I get wiped out again, there will be a little bit to get me going again.

I met with some one that new my name and he hailed me, but I was fighting a Troll and payed no attention to him and kept on trying to survive, I guees I should have been more friendly to him as he thought I was ignorant and, " poof" he was gone.

I found out later that these wizards leave you with some goodies. Hope I meet up with him again :-).

Lumbridge

This is where I ended up after i finisdedTutorial Island, I was told to go out and kill some trolls, which i did , good thing they are not to hard to kill.

After about an hour I had some money and other things and bones lots of them , I remembered that i was told to bury them and did, now I had more room and soon filled thatup with more things i did not know what they were for.

I went looking for a bank to deposit them, I thought this is easy, and just when I had the bank in sight, some dude attacked me and I was soon dead, back to Lumbridge to start all over with everything I had collected up, gone!!

Runescape Trip

The start of my trip through Runescape.

My son and daughter talked to me many times about Runescape so I thought I might as well try it and play with them even if it is across the room.

Before signing up to Runescape I read some of the material about the site and looked at some of the posts and comments, since I had not even seen the site I had no idea of what was to come.

After signing up to the free site I ended up on Tutorial Island.

This is where you set up your character and receive some of the training you need to start and survive in the game.

I chose chose what my character would look like and went on to some of the training, then logged off. I had not finished all of the training.
Later on I went back in and finished the training and was wisked out into runescape world some where.
My character did not look like the one I had chosen. Must have made a mistake somewhere along the line, hope I can fix it later.
